Monday night, I was informally pondering how my life would be different if I didn't turn on the TV for a week.I threw it out there on Twitter, then got a few folks contemplating the same thing. When I've done it kinda accidentally in the past, I noticed that I:
- Went to bed earlier. I just noticed I was tired sooner!
- Spent more time online. Unfortunately, it wasn't necessarily productive time (ahem, shopping; random Web surfing; more shopping; Twitter; Facebook; "window web shopping").
- Read more. Yeah, for real!
So, I decided, starting today (Tuesday), no TV for three days. As of this writing, @aunaptural and @NeoSoulAlterEgo on Twitter were with me.
After three days, report how it went, what we did differently, whether we cheated or sat on the cusp of a nervous breakdown.
Then, in the next week or so, go hard for seven days with some plans to replace the TV time with something else more productive -- maybe stuff we've been putting off for a while, stuff we always say we don't have time to do. We can make up the rules or whatever later.
Watch me just sleep eight extra hours the next few days. LOL!

Does TV at the gym count? I never listen to it there, just watch the pretty pictures.
I will give it a try. It was great during the hurricane (no electricity of 12 days), but I find myself mindlessly watching or have it on for background noise in the morning.
I'll go one better - no TV and no computer (after work hours) for 3 days.

I'm in! Actually I cut out TV year during the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter. I've only been successful once in the past 5 years! But this year things have been going well...4 weeks down and 4 to go!!!
Seriously, though productivity increases significantly after the first week!
Best of luck to everyone giving it a try.

I'm not a huge television watcher in the first place. Most of my TV time is spent watching the news, and there are a few regular shows that I like, most of which are on hiatus at the moment. I definitely spend more time online than in front of the TV. Not sure it's any better. :)

I did this as well and my television has been off from the beginning of the month. I actually unplugged it to make it even harder because the plug is in an awkward place and I get really annoyed plugging it back in.
So far I have gone 11 days without tv...although I did watch 24 and White Collar on Hulu.
I have spent the time that I would have been watching tv doing other things like exercising and reading ahead for my class.

@keilabee @LaShaune Thanks for joining the challenge! Watching TV on the treadmill... I don't think that counts so you should be good! Let me know how it went at the end.
@Keith Morris Yes, I have replaced some of the TV time with being online... although many times I'm online WHILE I watch TV. So does that mean I cut my productivity in half...
@LuLu Replacing TV with exercise is excellent!
