I'm not going to miss cable

I returned my cable box on Saturday (I forgot to bring the remote with me, duh). So, no more cable. But, a friend of mine scared me about not having any TV connection at all (think 9/11) so I decided to pay for basic cable, which is $11.95 for a handful of channels. I'm saving more than $60 a month.
Between blogs, podcasts, streaming radio and Youtube, I already don't miss cable. Why, when I can download music podcasts for free and hear all kinds of music and artists I might never have found out about otherwise. You can legitimately download episodes of new TV shows after they've aired. On Youtube, I found some of my favorite videos and TV shows from years ago. And, if I get that hankering, I'll join Netflix for about $11 a month and get TV DVDs and movies I actually want to see, not stuff that's just one whether I want to watch it or not.
I also realized something else, it's obvious, but it really struck me when I got rid of the cable: People steal things they should pay for, but pay for things they should be getting for free.
I'm paying $12 a month for seven channels that, in reality, are absolutely free! We're not supposed to pay for PBS. Never did when I was kid!  Why are we paying for CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX and the WB? My entire life, I watched shows on all those channels, crystal clear, and it cost us nothing! Why am I paying for them now?
It's a crime. I've tried to get those channels on my TV without the cable and nothing comes in. It's just not right.

DH, you might need to get a good set of rabbit ears. We bought a set at Radio Shack for $20 and the TV comes in great. The only prob witht that is the new HD tv. I don't think that works with ears.

I agree about getting an antenna - I have a small TV in my bedroom that is not connected to cable and I use rabbit ears with it, and I get the basic channels just fine. Of course it depends on where you live, how far you are from a transmission tower, how well this will work for you. But I am amazed at the number of people who seem to not even know about antennas anymore!
